Mama sang tenor...

Fun night tonight. I DJed the Johnny Cash tribute night at the Vera Project. There were about 9 local acts who each played a two or three Johnny Cash songs each. Before the first act, and in between sets, I played all the good rockabilly, old country, western swing, and rhythm and blues I could muster. Everything from Buddy Holly to the Cramps to Deke Dickerson to Carl Perkins to Social Distortion. It was a very strange mix, but I got a lot of compliments from people in the crowd and a LOT of dancers. It was fun during someone's set to find a song that sort of complimented their style and play it while they left the stage.

The best act of the night was one that wasn't even scheduled. It was a guy who just works at Vera a lot. The bands were all running way ahead of schedule and they needed to fill time. So he borrowed a guitar and got up there and did two songs. I don't remember what the first one was, but it was really good. For the second song, he brought up another one of the Vera volunteers and they did "Daddy Sang Bass" and it was FREAKING AWESOME. I couldn't believe how well they nailed it. The girl had just a perfect country voice and they did an amazing job. They were reading the lyrics off a sheet they'd just printed five minutes before taking the stage.

At the end of the night, I congratulated him on a good set and asked him if he'd ever sang that song before. He told me he hadn't, but he just knew the song and that he and that girl would just sing stuff like that together out of their heads while working. Awesome. Some people just have talent built right in there.

After the last band, I played "Johnny Yuma", "Sunday Morning Coming Down", and "Man in Black" as my own little contribution to the tribute to the greatest country singer ever.

Oh man! I didn't realize you were there. Did you work? How'd you like the filler music?

yeah, i was there for about an hour or so, i think. i didn't work, just stopped by. i've been volunteering there for over two years now, so i know a lot of people through vera. my housemates are two of the show managers, and i helped form the steering committee. i don't volunteer there as much as i used to, but i still love vera!
