Nice try... but no.

Let's talk for a second about the new Adult Swim show, "Tom Goes to the Mayor". Man... whoever picks shows for Adult Swim really just phoned it in that day, I guess. I mean, I can see how they might think, "Oh, well... it fits in with the other shows I guess," but damn. It just sucks and there's no two ways about it. It's so obviously trying to rip off the weird sort of non-sequitur comedy of shows like Harvey Birdman, and I guess they figured that going with a minimalist animation style would make them as successful as Sealab. The problem is that their comedy isn't funny at all and the "edgy and different" animation style seems to have been so concerned with being "edgy and different" that nobody bothered to think about whether it was cool, which it is not. It's like someone said, "Ok... We've got Adult Swim down to a pretty good formula now - quick and non-traditional animation, a mostly meaningless but weird plot, and have the characters say weird things a lot. Now, let's take that formula and crank out a new show, and if you can't come up with enough stuff to fill the whole time slot, don't worry, because you can just have really long pauses that show grainy photos of people making goofy faces. Apparently our viewers are 18 months old, so they'll be fully entertained." Well... it didn't work. Adult Swim, you can take semi-amusing goofiness like this and fill your bumpers with it pretty well, but don't try to pass off a whole show made out of it. It's just annoying.

Tom Goes to the Mayor, you can suck it.

i'm less than pleased with a bunch of adult swim shows. venture brothers kicks ass, but tom..., squidbillies, family guy, etc = no good. harvey birdman's jumped the shark and sealab's well on it's way.

i want more mision hill and home movies, dammit. and foolie coolie.

I still think Family Guy is the funniest thing on there. At times, I think it's better than the Simpsons. It's definitely better than today's Simpsons. The only reason I sort of get bored with it is that there hasn't been a new episode in a few years, but that's going to change starting in a few months.

I haven't watched much of the others. I stopped watching Sealab a little before Murphy died, and I haven't caught HB in a while either. I stopped watching Aqua Teens when they were all reruns for like a year.

I'm glad to see that they're running Mission Hill again, even if it is reruns. I don't think there will ever be new episodes of that. From what I heard, it was insanely expensive to produce. I've only watched Home Movies once or twice, and I remember thinking it was damn funny, but I didn't start TiVo'ing it.

i've tried to get into family guy, because nearly everyone i know loves it, but eh, i just can't. home movies is coming back in some incarnation, though. i heard that brendan small was cooking up something.

i'm just overall miffed at adult swim - i expect more from my cartoons!

Weird about Family Guy. For me, non-stop pop-culture references with heavy 80's focus = super-nitro-fueled-hilarity. Also, when people fall over really fast.

I didn't realize they were still making new Sealabs since Murphy died.

it's had its moments, such as the tenacious d guest-song about bear traps & the commercials with bob odenkirk, but on the whole it's too uneven.

sealab really needs to stop with the sharko.

Adult Swim is drowning and only The Venture Bros. can save it. Naturally, the network has yet to renew the show for a second season.

On a positive note, we get to see the current Adult Swim lineup quite literally jump the shark in the new episodes of Sealab. What fucking gibberish. Shoulda cancelled the show when Cap'n Murphy's voice passed away.

I have a slightly different sense of humor than other people, since I have not been able to "get" Aqua Teen Hunger Force (although I am willing to try again; maybe I'll rent the DVDs). I mostly just like Harvey Birdman and Sealab 2021. I hope that Marco's return on Sealab is a sign of renewed focus for that series.

That said, I think Tom Goes to the Mayor has had a few fun moments, and some of the deadpan humor/voices are amusing (my favorite bit is that every time the mayor acts like he's never met Tom before). But the plots have not been very funny at all and a little goes a long way. I don't think it'll last long.

I am just as pissed at Comedy Central for taking off "Tough Crowd" and replacing it with that stupid animated reality show thing. It is contrived and stupid.

Maybe because I like to hear people argue with great comebacks and no-holds barred un-PC banter, but Tough Crowd was a great half hour TV.
