Can they do that?

I just read this on a website I ordered some stuff from:

UPS, UPS brandmark, and the Color Brown are trademarks of United Parcel Service of America, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Dude. They trademarked BROWN.

I'm gonna start a company and trademark the letter E. Then I'm suing the shit out of everyone.

Sadly, this happens more often than you might think. Lots of designers patent the colors they "create." Whenever the Denver Public Library wanted or needed to paint its walls, they would have to spend mad cash for the special Michael Graves paint, since that's what he used when the building was designed. Bummer.

Also, did you ever see the Onion article where Microsoft Patented 1's and 0's? It was hilarious--they cited their autographed, first edition of Sartre's Being and Nothingness as proof that these numbers belonged to them.
