Dear Microsoft,

I just want the fucking spreadsheets to open in their own fucking windows, so I can maximize each one on its own fucking monitor so I can copy the updates from one to the other.

I know this can't possibly be a unique request, yet for the life of me I can't figure out how to make you do this.

I hope you die.

Dear Steve,

Click on the "Window" menu item and choose "New Window." You can then click on Window->Arrange and see a dizzying (at Micrsoft that means "4") array of options to arrange your spreadsheets so you can look at them all at once.

Unless, of course, you're on a Mac, in which case it should be totally obvious because isn't that their selling point?

Silver medal, but this does not allow for opening two discrete instances of Excel, which is what I'm looking for. I have two monitors. I want two Excels - one maximized to each monitor - with each showing one of two spreadsheets.

I figured out that the way around it is to launch E via the start menu and then manually open the second sheet in it.

i think this would work.

tools -> options -> check box for "windows in taskbar" from the "view" tab.

Try this, your spreadsheet program have a desktop icon? Actually a start-menu link would be just as well. With the one spreadsheet open, minimize the window and launch the spreadhseet program again. Not the spreadsheet -file-, 'cause that'll just open it in the same window. However if you re-launch the spreadsheet program while the other one is still open, it should open two separate spreadsheet "screens" to be used independently.
