I imagine it won't be long before this guy disappears from the face of the earth and this story gets buried or dismissed as "folklore". The oil companies have a few more years of milking and gouging to do.
How fucking incredible would it be, though, if this came to fruition? Imagine instead of lining up at the cartel's stations to pay your $.30/mile, you could just head down to the beach with a bucket? Places like the Bay Area would go from being among the most expensive places to drive to being the cheapest. Cab rides in Hawaii would be $.50.
I'm guessing it won't be that simple, though. I'm sure there's some sort of complex filtering that would have to be done, so that you couldn't just get it at the beach. You'd still have to get it at a Shell station, after it'd been all filtered and refined and whatnot, and it'd still cost $3/gallon. Ah well, at least it'd be clean.
