First, I ripped some songs from a couple of compilations my mom sent me, and a compilation that a local DJ gave me. Then I got out the big list of songs I've been meaning to get and went looking on Kazaa. Found a couple of things, but the list is still kind of long.
I'm still looking for mp3's of:
the chords - the british way of life
betty wright - if you ain't got it
the soul sisters - think about the good times
high keys - que sera sera
the showmen - our love will grow
don thomas - come on train
cliff nobles - love is alright
lonnie lester - you can't go
shuggie otis - hurricane
the johnny otis show - the watts breakaway
vespa142, some of those are your fault!
If anyone has mp3's of any of those, let me know and I'll set up a way for you to ftp them to me.
Then, the motherlode. I joined emusic.com. They have a feature called "label search", so I searched for "Stax". Oh man. There were a zillion matches. So I clicked "Various Artists". Half a zillion matches. All of those really amazing Stax/Volt singles collections that are like $150 each in stores are available on emusic for download. I proceeded to download about eight bazillion songs, and that was just from the first couple of comps. I still have about 20 or so more compilations FOR THAT LABEL ALONE to go through and pick out what I want. But, it's almost 3:30 in the morning and I need to get some sleep. I can download music no more.
My ears are happy, but my hard drive is hurtin'.
Some of the really good stuff I picked up tonight:
Baby Huey and the Baby Sitters - Monkey Man
Centurys - 83
The Bar-Keys - Montego Bay
Bernie Hayes - Cool Strut
The Mohawks - The Champ
Laura Lee - If You Can Beat Me Rockin'
Otis Redding & Carla Thomas - Tramp
Honey Cone - Want Ads
Arthur Alexander - Pretty Girls Everywhere
...and many more!
